Audi is preparing to take a big step in its electric vehicle journey by planning to unveil a new entry-level EV model. This move shows that the luxury carmaker is serious about making electric cars more accessible to a wider group of buyers, not just those at the very top of the market. As electric vehicles become more popular around the world, Audi does not want to be left behind in the growing demand for affordable luxury EVs.
The new electric model is expected to revive the A2 name, this time as an electric car known as the A2 e-tron. The original Audi A2 was a small, practical vehicle, but the electric version is expected to look very different. Early test models suggest that Audi is moving away from the old mini-MPV style and toward a more modern, crossover-like design. This new shape is likely to be more aerodynamic, which can help improve driving range and efficiency.
Audi’s decision comes at a time when its main rivals are also expanding their electric lineups. Mercedes-Benz has already launched its most affordable EV, while BMW is preparing to introduce new electric models aimed at the lower end of the luxury market. Audi wants to compete directly with these brands by offering a premium electric car that is more affordable than its current EV options.
The A2 e-tron is expected to become Audi’s cheapest electric vehicle when it goes on sale. Reports suggest it could start at around £30,000 ($40,781), making it far more accessible than larger Audi electric models. Although it was first planned to use a newer platform, Audi has chosen to build the car on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform. This is the same platform used by the Volkswagen ID.3 and has already proven reliable for electric vehicles.
Because of this platform choice, the new EV is expected to use a 400-volt electrical system and a rear-wheel-drive setup. Buyers may be offered different battery options, likely similar to those in the ID.3. These could include battery packs that provide a driving range of up to around 369 miles under WLTP testing standards. Thanks to its sleek design, the A2 e-tron could even deliver slightly better range.
Audi engineers have said that the new entry-level EV is meant to fill the gap left by compact premium electric cars that are no longer in production. At the same time, Volkswagen is also preparing to launch smaller and cheaper electric vehicles, showing that the entire group is focused on making EVs more affordable.
Overall, Audi’s plan to unveil an entry-level electric model signals a clear shift toward a future where luxury electric cars are within reach for more people, not just a select few.
Other firms like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) that focus on making luxury EVs may also have to rethink their strategies and decide whether to address the top tier of the market only or also broaden their range to serve the lower segments of the automotive market as competition stiffens.
