Australian Authorities to Start Enforcing New Conduct for Online Dating Industry

If you have ever used online dating apps, you know it’s not all swipes and sparks. Things can become quite tricky at any moment. To make things safer, Australia is stepping up with a brand-new code of conduct for dating apps, which will change the game. Platforms such as Bumble, Grindr, Tinder and Hinge are now required to boost user safety or face the consequences.

So, what has prompted this? Recent research by the Australian Institute of Criminology revealed that three of four Aussie users had experienced some form of sexual violence on these apps. In fact, sexual violence was rampant between 2016 and 2021, which is why the government has decided to establish regulations. By enforcing this code, the government believes people can be safe while swiping through potential matches.

For things to change, however, these apps must first have systems in place to detect harmful behavior. If someone gets banned for bad behavior on one platform, they would be out on all of them. Reporting incidents will be easier and clearer for users. On top of that, there will be a new rating system showing just how well each app is handling these safety measures. That way, you can see which platforms are keeping things safe.

All these dating apps have until April 1, 2025, to get their affairs together and meet regulations. After that, the government will start enforcing the rules with a little more muscle. But some platforms, such as Match Group, which operates Tinder and OKCupid, are already making moves. Tinder’s rolling out photo and ID verification, and the company even has nifty AI tech that warns users if their opening line is somewhat abrasive. It’s like having a virtual wingman giving you a heads-up before you say something regretful.

Bumble is also in the camp. The company has always been big on safety, especially for women and LGBTQ+ users. The new rules are consistent with its mission to build a safer, more respectful dating world. Grindr, another major app, worked hand-in-hand with the government on this one and is just as committed to continue its safety game.

Not every dating app has jumped on the bandwagon. Apps such as Happn, Coffee Meets Bagel, and Feeld have yet to sign on, which could lead to some serious pressure down the line. The government has already hinted that if these platforms don’t start taking safety seriously, legislation might be the next step.

Entities that have a business interest in the online dating industry of other markets, such as Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO), could take cues from what is happening in Australia and consider taking proactive steps to institute safeguards that shield platform users from different forms of risks, including sexual abuse.
