Online dating company Bumble is introducing a new artificial intelligence assistant designed to improve how people connect on the platform. The company hopes this new feature will help users find more meaningful matches and create better conversations.
The new AI assistant is called Bee. It is designed to act like a personal matchmaker inside the Bumble app. Instead of only relying on photos and quick swipes, Bee will talk with users privately to understand who they are and what they are looking for in a relationship.
During these conversations, the assistant will ask questions about a person’s values, communication style, lifestyle, and dating goals. By learning these details, the AI will be able to suggest matches that share similar priorities.
Bumble says the goal of Bee is to focus more on compatibility rather than appearance. Many dating apps have been criticized for encouraging people to judge others mainly by their photos. Bumble believes a deeper understanding of personality and intentions can help users build stronger connections.
Bee will also power a new optional feature on the platform called “Dates.” When the AI identifies two users who seem compatible, it will notify them about the possible match. Instead of simply showing a profile, the assistant will provide a short description explaining why the two people might get along. This summary is meant to help users start more natural and meaningful conversations.
At the moment, Bee is still being tested inside the company. Bumble plans to release a public beta version of the feature within the next few months so that users can begin trying it themselves.
The AI assistant is part of a broader update to the platform known as Bumble 2.0. This upgrade aims to change the way people present themselves on the app. One of the new ideas is “chapter-based” profiles. These profiles allow users to share their personal stories in sections, giving others a clearer picture of their life and interests.
In some markets, the company is even experimenting with removing the traditional swipe system.
Bumble has already started using artificial intelligence in other parts of the app. For example, some tools help users write better profile bios, select stronger photos, and improve safety features. The company believes these tools can make the dating experience smoother and more enjoyable.
The push toward AI comes at a time when Bumble is facing challenges. The company has seen a drop in paying users over the past year, and revenue has also declined. Bumble’s leadership says the changes are meant to respond to growing dissatisfaction with image-focused dating apps, especially among younger users.
Despite these challenges, investors have shown optimism about Bumble’s new direction. The company’s stock price rose after it announced the new AI plans and reported better-than-expected quarterly revenue.
With Bee and the broader Bumble 2.0 update, the company hopes artificial intelligence can help bring a more thoughtful and authentic approach to online dating. Analysts are waiting to see how other players like Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO) in the online dating space respond to the growing frustration with existing dating apps and tweak their offerings to boost user satisfaction.
