China-Made Sodium Battery Surprisingly Matches Tesla Battery Standards

A new study has revealed that a sodium-ion battery made by Chinese manufacturer Hina has achieved performance levels that are closer than expected to those of Tesla’s lithium-ion batteries. The findings have attracted attention because sodium-ion technology has long been viewed as a lower-cost alternative that still had a significant gap to close before competing with leading battery technologies.

The research was carried out by scientists from RWTH Aachen University in Germany. They examined 120 commercial sodium-ion battery cells to better understand their design, quality, and performance. The team used advanced testing methods to measure how the batteries performed under different temperatures and operating conditions. They also used X-rays and detailed inspections to study the internal structure of the cells.

One of the most surprising discoveries was the high level of manufacturing quality. Researchers found that the battery cells were very uniform, meaning they were built consistently, with few differences between individual units. This is an important feature because uniform batteries are generally more reliable and perform better over time.

The scientists also discovered that the battery uses a tabless, double-aluminum current collector design. This design helps reduce electrical resistance and improves the distribution of heat inside the battery. According to the researchers, the structure is similar to the architecture used in Tesla batteries, showing that sodium-ion technology is becoming increasingly sophisticated.

The battery demonstrated strong performance in several key areas. It delivered good power output and maintained solid performance under load, even in cold conditions. These qualities could make sodium-ion batteries useful for large-scale energy storage systems, grid services, commercial vehicles, and electric vehicles that do not require extremely long driving ranges.

Despite the positive results, the study also identified some challenges. One major weakness is charging performance in very cold weather. Researchers found that the battery struggles when charged at low temperatures, which could limit its use in some environments unless better charging strategies or thermal management systems are developed.

Another limitation is energy density. Current sodium-ion batteries store less energy than the best lithium-ion batteries. As a result, vehicles powered by sodium-ion batteries may not travel as far on a single charge as those using advanced lithium-ion technology.

Researchers also found unusual concentrations of copper in certain parts of the battery. While the exact impact is still being studied, scientists believe this area deserves further investigation.

Because sodium is abundant and widely available, sodium-ion batteries could eventually reduce battery costs and lessen dependence on lithium supplies. If future improvements increase energy density and improve cold-weather charging, sodium-ion batteries may become a strong competitor in the growing markets for electric vehicles and energy storage, offering a more affordable and sustainable solution for the future.

As other firms like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) race to commercialize solid-state batteries, Chinese firms are already opening up another frontier of competition in the battery segment by marketing sodium batteries. The future is likely to feature batteries of different chemistries serving different end uses.
