EV Battery Makers Switch to Producing Batteries for Energy Storage

Electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturers are exploring a new business opportunity as demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers continues to grow. Companies that once focused mainly on producing batteries for electric cars are now converting unused production lines to make batteries for energy storage. This move could help them generate new income while finding a purpose for factories that are not operating at full capacity.

Several major carmakers and battery manufacturers are already making this change. Ford, General Motors (GM), and LG are adapting some of their EV battery facilities to produce stationary energy storage systems. These systems can store electricity and support the power needs of data centers and electricity grids.

Ford, for example, is investing approximately $2 billion in Kentucky to support battery storage production. The project is expected to have an annual production capacity of around 20 gigawatt-hours (GWh). This investment highlights the growing interest in energy storage as manufacturers search for new markets beyond electric vehicles.

General Motors and LG are also retooling battery facilities in Tennessee. Their plans include producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells, which are used in different energy storage applications. By adjusting existing factories, manufacturers may be able to use their current equipment, workers, and technical experience instead of building completely new facilities.

AI data centers are one of the main customers driving interest in energy storage. These facilities require large amounts of electricity to operate powerful computer servers. Energy storage systems can help manage electricity supply, support the grid, and provide additional power flexibility. As investment in AI infrastructure increases, battery makers see an opportunity to serve this expanding market.

However, the transition comes with several challenges. EV battery factories cannot always be converted without major changes. Manufacturers may need new container assembly systems and grid-grade testing to ensure that their products meet the requirements of stationary energy storage.

Competition is another concern. Chinese battery manufacturers are putting pressure on storage prices, making it harder for companies to achieve high profit margins. Tesla and LG are also among the companies competing in the energy storage market.

European carmakers are exploring similar opportunities. Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz are pursuing integrated energy storage projects in Germany, showing that the shift is taking place across different regions.

Despite the potential benefits, the future of this market remains uncertain. Improvements in AI technology could reduce the electricity needed for some data center operations. In addition, public opposition to new data center developments could slow demand for energy storage systems.

For now, converting EV battery factories offers manufacturers a way to explore new markets. However, long-term success will depend on production costs, competition, and how demand for electricity develops in the coming years. For battery developers like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS), that future demand is what they are counting on in their bid to commercialize better battery chemistries that address the limitations of existing varieties.
