Gen Zs Dislike Online Dating But Many Don’t See Better Options

Gen Z grew up with smartphones, social media, and instant connections, so many people assume online dating should feel natural to them. But for a growing number of young adults, dating apps have become more frustrating than exciting. Even though these platforms are meant to make finding love easier, many Gen Zs say the experience feels tiring, confusing, and far from romantic.

One of the biggest issues is that many young people do not actually enjoy swiping through profiles. Dating apps often turn people into photos and short bios, making connections feel shallow. Instead of excitement, the process can feel like a routine task.

Because of this, many Gen Zs wish they could meet someone in more traditional ways, like through chance encounters, shared spaces, or real-life conversations. They miss the idea of romance that feels natural and meaningful rather than rushed and transactional. However, there is a major problem. Even though many Gen Zs dislike online dating, a large number of them do not know any other way to meet a partner.

Dating apps have become so dominant that they have replaced many older social spaces where people used to meet. Fewer people socialize in person, and approaching someone face-to-face now feels uncomfortable or risky. This leaves many young adults feeling stuck, using apps they dislike simply because they see no better option.

Fear and embarrassment also play a big role. Many Gen Zs say they are too shy or nervous to express romantic interest in person. The idea of rejection feels heavier when it happens face-to-face. Dating apps offer a sense of emotional distance, even though they often lead to disappointment. This explains why many people delete dating apps, only to download them again a few days later.

Despite living in a digital world, Gen Z still values real-life romance. Many would rather be asked out in person than through a text or social media message. Small gestures matter to them more than grand displays. Things like flowers, handwritten notes, or simple surprises feel more meaningful than flashy online interactions. For many, romance is not about big moments but about thoughtful effort.

At the same time, a growing number of Gen Zs believe romance is fading. They feel it is harder to find true love today than it was before dating apps became common. This belief adds to their frustration and disappointment with modern dating.

Overall, Gen Z’s relationship with online dating is complicated. They rely on it, dislike it, and feel trapped by it. What many seem to want is not more technology, but more courage, connection, and space for genuine human interaction in a world that has slowly forgotten how to slow down and feel. Companies like Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO) with interests in the online dating space have an opportunity to come up with innovations that could make online dating more appealing to Gen Zs and other users in general.
