The Netherlands has become one of the leading examples of how electric vehicle sharing can work in real life. Instead of everyone owning a private car, many Dutch communities are now using shared electric cars through local cooperatives. One of the best known examples is a network called DEEL, where neighborhoods collectively manage a small fleet of EVs for daily use.
In this system, residents do not need to buy a car. Instead, they join a cooperative, pay a monthly subscription, and then pay a small fee each time they use a vehicle. Cars are booked through a simple app, and neighbors often communicate through group chats to organize schedules.
Because most members only need a car occasionally, usually for weekend trips or special errands, a small number of shared vehicles is enough for many households. This makes the system both practical and efficient.
One of the biggest advantages of EV sharing in the Netherlands is its impact on the environment and city life. Fewer privately owned cars mean less traffic, lower emissions, and reduced noise pollution. Electric vehicles are especially helpful because they produce no direct exhaust emissions.
The system also frees up valuable urban space. Parking areas that once held private cars can be turned into green spaces, bike lanes, or community areas, making cities more pleasant and liveable.
The success of the Dutch model is also linked to strong local support. In some cities, governments provide subsidies to help start these cooperatives. They also support the system by offering parking spaces and installing charging stations. In return, communities often agree to reduce the number of parking spots used by private cars.
This cooperation between local authorities and residents has helped the idea grow in several Dutch cities. Another important factor is trust within the community. Because users are neighbors who know each other, they tend to treat the vehicles with care and follow shared rules.
This social connection helps the system run smoothly and reduces problems like misuse or conflict. However, this same feature also limits how large the model can grow since it works best in small, close-knit groups.
Despite its success, the model is not easy to expand everywhere. Managing shared cars requires coordination, volunteer effort, and reliable funding. At a certain point, growth can become difficult without more structured management. There are also challenges such as insurance costs and the need for enough participants to make the system financially stable.
Even so, experts believe the Dutch approach offers a strong example for the future of transport. It shows that combining electric vehicles with shared ownership can reduce environmental impact while improving urban life. With the right policies and local adaptation, similar systems could work in other countries, though they may need to adjust to different social and urban conditions.
Automakers could consider coming up with similar models as a way to deepen their market access. Could American startups like Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) incorporate such a mechanism within their strategies? Only time will tell.
