In today’s fast-changing world, how people date and build romantic connections is also changing. For years, dating apps like Tinder and Bumble were the go-to options for meeting new people. But now, many users are getting tired of swiping, rising costs, and meaningless conversations. This has led to a decline in app popularity, with some companies even laying off workers due to fewer users.
As a result, in-person dating is making a big comeback. People are going back to more traditional ways of meeting, such as speed dating, running clubs, and social events like daytime parties. For older generations like millennials, this shift feels familiar. But for Gen Z, who have grown up in the digital age, meeting face-to-face can be uncomfortable and challenging.
One major reason is that Gen Z often lacks experience in real-life communication. At a recent conference in Canada, a young woman pointed out what she called “extrovert privilege.” She explained that not everyone is outgoing and that it can be tough for introverts to feel comfortable with in-person dating. Many Gen Zers feel shy and anxious about talking to strangers, especially when they’ve spent most of their lives behind screens.
Still, the interest in offline dating is growing. Some dating apps are also supporting this trend. For example, Hinge started a campaign called One More Hour to help users, especially Gen Z, connect in real life. The idea is to create chances for genuine interactions in safe, welcoming places like parks, libraries, or social events.
Organizations like We Met IRL are also helping. Founded in 2022, this group organizes events where people can meet face-to-face and build either romantic or platonic connections. It was started to provide more diverse and inclusive dating options outside of apps.
Even though many Gen Zers want real relationships, they also worry about being cheated on, ghosted, or emotionally hurt. Growing up during the COVID-19 pandemic and seeing harmful online content, like toxic influencers, has made things worse. Boys, in particular, are said to be struggling with emotional openness, making dating even more difficult.
But there’s hope. Experts say that dating skills can be learned. Gen Z can build confidence through preparation, practicing social skills, and reflecting on their values. Talking to a therapist, using vision boards, or joining supportive communities can also help.
In-person dating may feel hard now, but with patience and the right tools, Gen Z can grow more confident. Real connections take time, effort, and vulnerability, things that can’t always be found on a screen.
As the dating landscape continues to evolve, enterprises like Momo Inc. (NASDAQ: MOMO) with interests in the online dating space may need to tweak their offerings in order to retain and even grow their market share.
