The battery industry is moving quickly, and new technologies are appearing before existing ones have fully matured. One of the latest examples is the growing interest in lithium-air batteries. While solid-state batteries are still being developed and tested for wider use, researchers and battery companies are already looking beyond them toward lithium-air technology.
For several years, solid-state batteries have been considered the next major step in battery development. They are expected to offer higher energy density, improved safety, and better performance than traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Many automakers and battery manufacturers are investing heavily in this technology, hoping to bring it into large-scale production in the coming years. However, many technical challenges still need to be solved before solid-state batteries become common in electric vehicles.
Despite these challenges, attention is now shifting toward lithium-air batteries. Industry experts believe this technology could represent an even bigger breakthrough in the future. Lithium-air batteries use lithium metal and oxygen from the air to generate electricity. Because oxygen comes directly from the atmosphere, the battery requires fewer heavy materials than conventional battery designs.
The biggest attraction of lithium-air batteries is their extremely high energy density. Current lithium-ion batteries typically achieve around 250 to 270 watt-hours per kilogram. Some solid-state batteries are expected to reach about 500 watt-hours per kilogram.
In comparison, lithium-air batteries have already demonstrated energy densities above 1,200 watt-hours per kilogram in laboratory settings. Their theoretical potential is even higher, approaching the energy density of gasoline.
This could have a major impact on electric vehicles. Cars powered by lithium-air batteries may eventually travel much farther on a single charge than today’s electric vehicles. Longer driving ranges could help reduce concerns about charging frequency and make electric transportation more practical for many users.
However, lithium-air batteries remain far from commercial reality. Researchers continue to face significant obstacles. The batteries are sensitive to moisture and carbon dioxide in the air, which can interfere with their chemical reactions. Other challenges include improving battery lifespan, maintaining stability, and developing suitable materials for large-scale production.
Recent research has shown encouraging progress. Scientists have developed experimental lithium-air batteries capable of hundreds of charging cycles while maintaining performance. These achievements suggest that the technology may one day become practical, although widespread use is still years away.
The emergence of lithium-air batteries highlights how rapidly battery innovation is advancing. While solid-state batteries are still working toward commercial success, researchers are already exploring technologies that could go even further. The future of energy storage is unlikely to depend on a single solution.
Instead, lithium-ion, sodium-ion, solid-state, and lithium-air batteries may all play important roles as the industry continues to evolve. Electric vehicle makers like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) will have an opportunity to evaluate the viability of these different battery chemistries once they hit the market in order to decide on their suitability for the EV models they make.
