Mazda Announces its EVs Will Use NACS Chargers in Japan

Mazda has officially announced that its future electric vehicles (EVs) in Japan will use the North American Charging Standard (NACS), which was developed by Tesla. Starting from 2027, new Mazda EVs sold in Japan will be built with NACS charging ports.

This decision means Mazda customers in Japan will be able to use Tesla’s Supercharger stations. These stations are known for being fast, reliable, and widely available. Mazda also shared that drivers will still be able to use other types of chargers by using special adapters.

The goal of this move is to give customers more convenient charging options. In Japan, many fast chargers still use the CHAdeMO standard. However, the growth of this network has slowed down in recent years. By teaming up with Tesla, Mazda is making sure its future EV drivers have better and faster charging access.

This is not Mazda’s first time adopting the NACS standard. In early 2024, the company said that its electric cars in the United States would also use NACS starting in 2025. But Mazda hasn’t released a new electric vehicle in the U.S. since its MX-30 model was taken off the market in July 2023.

Tesla first made the NACS plug available to other companies in late 2022. At that time, it was not an official standard, but it became one in December 2023. Since then, several big car companies, including Ford, General Motors, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and others, have chosen to use the NACS plug in their future electric vehicles.

In North America, many automakers are switching to NACS because Tesla’s Supercharger network is large and very dependable. Instead of building their own fast-charging networks, it’s easier and cheaper for companies to use the one Tesla already has. It also helps speed up the growth of electric mobility by giving drivers more charging options on the road.

Right now, Mazda is the only Japanese car company that has announced plans to use NACS in Japan. Other major brands like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Subaru have not yet made similar announcements. Still, these companies have already agreed to use NACS for their electric vehicles in the U.S.

It’s not clear if other Japanese automakers will follow Mazda’s lead in Japan. But for now, Mazda’s decision marks an important step toward improving EV charging options for drivers in the country. As demand for electric cars grows, easy and fast charging will become even more important.

With more companies switching to the NACS system of chargers, it may become inevitable for others like Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN) to follow suit to reap the benefits that come with using an existing system that has a proven track record and an extensive charger network.
