Recently, QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) announced that it had begun shipping its latest battery prototype in accordance with this year’s objectives. This marks an important step in the company’s journey toward the commercialization of its QSE-5 battery cell.
The battery prototypes, Alpha-2 battery cells, represent an evolution from the A0 prototypes that were sent to consumers for automotive qualification at the end of 2022.
One of its clients, PowerCo, confirmed that QuantumScape’s solid state cell significantly outdid the requirements in the A-sample test and completed more than 1,000 charging cycles. For an electric vehicle with a range of 500–600 kilometers (km), this corresponds to a mileage of more than 500,000 km.
PowerCo observed that the battery cell had 95% of its capacity and had barely aged by the end of the test. Additionally, the battery cell met self-discharge and fast-charging capability criteria. Frank Blome, PowerCo CEO, noted that the results observed were encouraging and reinforced the potential of the solid-state cell.
The Alpha-2 prototypes have more efficient cell packaging, which includes thinner components and tighter internal margins. Their energy density is also improved, achieved through higher-loading cathodes. The prototypes are a precursor to the QSE-5 B0 cells, which the company hopes to produce later in the year.
Dr. Siva Sivaram, CEO and president of QuantumScape, called attention to the importance of consumer feedback obtained through the testing of the Alpha-2 prototype. Sivaram noted that feedback helped refine the product while also accelerating the path to production.
QuantumScape is optimistic about the initial performance results of the Alpha-2 prototypes and looks forward to the release of its 24-layer QSE-5 prototypes. The company is committed to transforming how energy is stored using solid-state lithium metal battery technology. Its next-generation batteries have been designed to provide faster charging and improve safety to support the transition to a lower carbon future.
Chief technology officer and QuantumScape cofounder, Tim Holme, discussed the improvements made in the prototypes, noting that the QSE-5 cells could possibly redefine standards for solid-state battery performance.
Currently, the company is centered on achieving key milestones, including ramping up the production process for Raptor and integrating improvements into the QSE-5 prototypes. This year, the company is also focused on improving reliability, delivering the Alpha-2 cells to its automotive clients, and preparing to produce its solid-state electrolyte-separator using the Cobra process and equipment. The latter is scheduled to begin next year.
Meanwhile, PowerCo is convinced that the solid-state cell holds great potential and remains committed to working with QuantumScape toward production.
