Russian Scientists Use X-Rays to Design Flexible Phone Batteries

Smartphones have come a long way. Today, we have foldable phones and even screens that roll up. But one big problem still remains, the battery. No matter how advanced the phone is, the battery inside is still stiff and solid, making it hard to build phones that can truly bend in every part. Now Russian scientists may have found a solution, and it’s all thanks to X-rays.

Most parts of a phone can now be made flexible. Screens can bend, and even the tiny circuit boards inside can be made to twist. But the battery has always been a problem. It is hard, cannot bend, and can break if it is damaged or pressed too much, limiting how far foldable technology can go.

Scientists from Russia, working with experts around the world, have used X-rays to study how batteries can be made flexible. They found a way to design batteries that do not use solid parts inside. Instead, they use special thick fluids that act like toothpaste. These fluids replace the solid electrodes and help the battery bend and stretch without breaking.

X-rays help scientists see inside things without opening them. Just like doctors use X-rays to look at bones, these scientists used them to study how the battery works when it bends or stretches. This helped them improve the design and make sure the battery is safe and strong.

The new battery is not only flexible, it is also stretchable. In tests, it was able to stretch up to five times its size and still work. It also stayed strong after hundreds of bends. This means it could last a long time and still keep charging your phone.

Right now, this battery is just a test. It is not ready to be put in phones yet. But the idea is very exciting. If scientists keep working on it, we could soon see phones that are fully bendable, not just the screen, but the whole device.

The new type of battery could be useful in more than just foldable phones. It might make all phones safer and stronger. Flexible batteries are less likely to break if you drop your phone, which means fewer accidents and better safety.

We may not see rollable or stretchable phones in stores this year or even next, but this discovery is a big step forward. Thanks to X-ray research and smart science, the future of flexible technology looks brighter than ever.

Battery tech is developing rapidly and as scientists work to commercialize foldable ones, battery chemistries like solid-state batteries from firms like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) are undergoing real-world tests paving way for mass production.
