Samsung Develops Solid-State Battery Using Silver and Carbon

Samsung is working on a new type of battery that could change the future of electric vehicles. This new design is called a solid-state battery, and it uses a combination of silver and carbon to improve how the battery works. While current lithium-ion batteries have helped electric cars become more popular, they still face challenges such as limited range, slow charging, and safety risks. Samsung’s new approach aims to solve these problems.

One of the biggest issues with traditional batteries is the formation of dendrites. These are tiny, needle-like structures made of lithium that can grow inside the battery during charging. Over time, dendrites can damage the battery by causing short circuits, which may lead to overheating or even fires. This has been a major barrier in developing safer and more powerful batteries.

To address this, Samsung introduced a very thin layer made of silver and carbon. This layer is only about five micrometers thick, but it plays a critical role. The silver helps control how lithium behaves inside the battery. It allows lithium to spread evenly instead of forming dangerous spikes. As a result, the battery becomes more stable, safer, and longer-lasting.

Another key innovation in Samsung’s design is the “anode-less” structure. In most batteries today, there is a graphite anode that stores lithium. Samsung removes this part and replaces it with the silver-carbon layer. During charging, lithium forms naturally in the battery instead of being stored in a pre-existing anode. This makes the battery more compact and efficient.

Because of this design, Samsung expects major improvements in performance. The company is targeting an energy density of about 900 watt-hours per liter, which is roughly double that of current lithium-ion batteries. This could allow electric vehicles to travel up to 600 miles on a single charge.

In addition, charging time could be reduced to just nine minutes, making electric cars much more convenient to use. The battery is also expected to last up to 20 years, which is much longer than today’s average lifespan.

Samsung plans to begin mass production of this battery by 2027. However, like many new technologies, there are still challenges to overcome. Producing solid-state batteries on a large scale can be difficult and expensive. Other companies are also working on similar technologies, which means competition is strong.

If Samsung succeeds, this new battery could transform the electric vehicle industry. It could make cars safer, faster to charge, and capable of traveling longer distances. At the same time, the use of silver inside the battery could increase demand for the metal in new and important ways.

As different companies like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) and Samsung pursue their plans of commercializing solid-state batteries, the future of electric mobility could be reshaped in a big way by these innovations.
