Tesla Suspends Receiving Orders for Most Affordable Cybertruck, Announces Availability of Premium Versions

If you were hoping to snag Tesla’s cybertruck priced at $61,000 with a 250-mile range, you are too late. The company has announced that it is suspending orders for this model to concentrate more on the premium version, priced at $100,000. The leading electric vehicle (EV) company has already rolled out the red carpet for the expensive cybertrucks, which are ready to be delivered as soon as this month.

So why the switch? In 2019, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA)‘s CEO, Elon Musk, introduced the concept of the cybertruck with a $39,900 starting price and a 500-mile range. It was meant to be a game-changer, and many people were all over it. However, the vehicle experienced several delays before being released for deliveries in late 2023. In spite of this, the company received more than a million reservations for the model. Fast-forward to today, and the demand is not so high. Industry experts believe that the reservations Musk mentioned did not accurately reflect market demands.

According to Sam Abuelsamid, an analyst at Guidehouse Insights, this might be a sign that demand isn’t quite what Tesla hoped it would be. He believes that the demand is significantly less than a million trucks. Abuelsamid added that while initially there was a lot of hype, delivering these cybertrucks at that lower price point might not be as profitable as Tesla first thought. For this reason, the company is now pushing its premium version to maximize profits.

By the end of August, you can get your hands on the $99,990 dual-motor Foundation Limited series, boasting a 318-mile range. If you are looking to splurge a little more, the $119,990 trimotor Foundation Cyberbeast is also up for grabs, offering a 301-mile range and hitting the roads in October. Given these price tags, it’s clear these vehicles are targeted for the high-end market.

However, Tesla has a plety of hurdles to overcome, even with all the buzz going around in the industry. The EV maker sold about 4,800 cybertrucks in July alone, making it the top-selling vehicle in the U.S. for vehicles priced higher than $100,000. Nevertheless, there is one big problem: keeping those sales numbers up might not be a walk in the park. Selling a cybertruck at that price point isn’t going to be easy in the long run.
