Electric vehicles are becoming more common on roads across the UK, and many people are choosing them because they produce fewer emissions and have lower running costs. As more drivers buy and sell used electric vehicles, one question has become increasingly important: How healthy is the battery? A new partnership between Generational and Maverick Diagnostics aims to make it much easier for drivers to find the answer through regular battery health checks.
The two companies have joined forces to make EV battery testing available in around 6,000 auto workshops around the UK. Their goal is to encourage drivers to include battery health checks as part of their normal annual vehicle maintenance. Instead of only checking the battery when buying or selling a vehicle, motorists will be able to have it tested during routine servicing, MOT appointments, pre-purchase inspections, or before putting a vehicle on the market.
Under the partnership, Generational will supply the battery testing equipment and software used to examine the battery’s condition. The company will also provide easy-to-read reports and battery health certificates for customers. Maverick Diagnostics committed to promoting the technology and providing training and guidance to workshops so they can carry out the tests correctly.
The testing approach was designed to be simple and quick. A small device is connected to the vehicle’s OBD port, allowing the testing software to collect important battery information. Within minutes, the system produces a report showing the battery’s overall health, each battery cell’s condition, and how the battery compares with the original capacity it had. This information helps drivers better understand how their vehicle is performing and what they can expect in the future.
Battery health has become an important factor in the value of used electric vehicles. Although studies show that most EV batteries remain in good condition for many years, their performance can vary depending on factors such as the vehicle’s age, charging habits, driving style, and maintenance history. This means that every vehicle should be assessed individually rather than relying on general assumptions.
Generational’s Battery Performance Index, built on at least 8,000 battery assessments done across the United Kingdom, found that the average health of batteries is 95.15 percent. The research also showed that many older and higher-mileage electric vehicles continue to perform well. However, differences between batteries become more noticeable as vehicles age, making regular testing even more valuable.
By making battery health checks part of routine vehicle maintenance, the new partnership hopes to increase confidence among electric vehicle owners and buyers. Easy access to reliable battery information will help motorists make informed decisions, improve transparency in the used EV market, and support the continued growth of electric vehicle ownership.
Routine battery health checks will also allow the industry to compare different types of batteries, such as the solid-state batteries being developed by companies like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) with lithium-ion batteries and other novel battery types being introduced on the market for use in electri
c vehicles.
