Guterres Calls for Humanity’s Involvement in Shaping AI Trajectory

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world faster than ever before. It is helping people improve healthcare, education, farming, business, and many other areas of life. However, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres believes that the future of AI should not be decided by only a few powerful countries or large technology companies. Instead, he says every nation should have a chance to help shape how AI develops and is used.

Speaking at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai, Guterres described AI as one of humanity’s greatest opportunities in the 21st century. At the same time, he warned that it could also become one of humanity’s greatest risks if it is not managed responsibly. He stressed that technology with such a huge impact on people’s lives should be guided by all of humanity.

The UN has already taken important steps to encourage global cooperation on AI. It has supported the Global Digital Compact, created an Independent International Scientific Panel on AI, and held the first Global Dialogue on AI Governance. These efforts are designed to help countries share knowledge, develop common standards, and make sure developing nations have a stronger voice in AI discussions.

Guterres said the next challenge is turning these global commitments into real action. He believes every country should have the opportunity to benefit from AI, regardless of its level of development. Today, many developing countries still face challenges such as limited internet access, lack of computing power, and fewer technology experts. If these problems are ignored, AI could increase the gap between wealthy and poorer nations.

The Secretary-General also highlighted the many ways AI can support sustainable development. It can help doctors make medical discoveries, improve learning in schools, strengthen food production, and create new jobs. These benefits could also help countries achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

To make AI work for everyone, Guterres outlined three important priorities. First, developing countries should receive support to build AI systems using their own data, languages, and local expertise. Second, countries should work together to create international safety standards that protect people and follow international law. Finally, AI should be developed in ways that reduce environmental harm by using clean energy and lowering its carbon footprint.

Guterres also emphasized that human rights must remain at the center of AI development. People should always stay in control of life-and-death decisions, and AI systems should be proven safe before being placed in the hands of children.

As AI continues to shape the future, Guterres believes the world must work together to ensure it creates more opportunities instead of greater inequality. By giving every nation a voice, protecting human rights, and promoting responsible innovation, AI can become a powerful force that benefits all of humanity rather than only a select few.

While the UN Secretary-General’s concerns focused on AI, they could also apply to other advanced technologies, such as quantum computing that several corporations like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) are seeking to commercialize.
