Crypto PAC Injects $1 Million into Michigan Political Campaigns

The cryptocurrency industry is becoming a bigger player in American politics, with political action committees (PACs) spending millions of dollars to support candidates they believe will promote digital asset innovation. One of the latest examples comes from Michigan, where a crypto-backed PAC has injected another $1 million into an important congressional race.

The move highlights the growing influence of the crypto sector as lawmakers debate new rules for digital currencies and blockchain technology. Protect Progress PAC, an affiliate of the crypto-focused Fairshake political network, recently increased its spending in Michigan’s 13th Congressional District Democratic primary.

According to filings with the U.S. Federal Election Commission (FEC), the committee has now spent more than $2 million on media campaigns connected to the race. The latest spending includes nearly $884,240 on advertisements supporting incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar.

It also includes more than $150,000 on advertisements opposing his challenger, Donavan McKinney. This new investment almost doubled the amount the PAC had previously reported, showing how important the race has become for groups supporting cryptocurrency-friendly policies.

The PAC’s support for Thanedar is closely linked to his record in Congress. He has voted in favor of the GENIUS Act, a bill designed to create rules for stablecoins. He also supported the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, which aims to establish a clearer legal framework for cryptocurrencies and other digital assets.

In addition, Thanedar co-sponsored the Promoting Innovation in Blockchain Development Act, which seeks to protect blockchain developers and encourage technological growth.

McKinney has criticized the large amount of money flowing into the race from crypto-related groups. He argued that the cryptocurrency industry is rewarding Thanedar for supporting policies that benefit the sector. His campaign also questioned the growing role of wealthy industry-backed organizations in influencing election outcomes.

Michigan is not the only state seeing increased political spending from crypto-backed groups. Fairshake and its affiliates are also supporting candidates in other congressional races, including contests in Washington and Alabama. These organizations have become major financial players in recent election cycles, spending hundreds of millions of dollars to back candidates who support digital asset innovation and clearer cryptocurrency regulations.

Supporters of these efforts argue that friendly policies can encourage investment, strengthen blockchain technology, and help the United States remain competitive in the global digital economy.

Critics, however, believe that such large campaign contributions could give the cryptocurrency industry too much influence over public policy and elected officials.

As the primary elections approach, political observers will continue watching how crypto-backed spending affects campaign results. The outcome of these races could shape the future of cryptocurrency regulation in the United States and influence how Congress approaches important legislation involving stablecoins, blockchain development, and the broader digital asset market.

Whatever the outcome of the polls, businesses like Riot Blockchain Inc. (NASDAQ: RIOT) hope that elected lawmakers will play their part and create regulatory frameworks to govern the crypto industry so that companies have a firm basis when making their plans.
