European EV Users See 33% Drop in Running Costs vs. Gas Cars

European EV drivers are seeing a growing financial advantage over people who use gasoline-powered cars, as the cost of running battery electric vehicles continues to fall. International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) data shows battery electric vehicles (BEVs) were about 33% more affordable to drive compared to gasoline cars across the EU in 2025.

This gap has become even more important in 2026. Rising oil and fuel costs have increased the energy expenses of traditional cars, while the cost of powering electric vehicles has remained more stable. This is giving vehicle owners a stronger reason to consider electric cars beyond their environmental benefits.

The changing cost of batteries is also helping electric vehicles become more competitive. Global battery costs reduced by 35% in the years 2020-2025. During the same period, inflation-adjusted prices for BEVs in Germany fell by 18% after differences in vehicle features like driving range were considered. In comparison, prices for ICE cars increased by about 2%.

This means the advantage of EVs isn’t limited to fuel savings alone. In Germany, BEVs had already attained upfront price equality in 2025 with similar gasoline vehicles in the top three car segments. The variety of electric models on offer within the country also grew rapidly, reaching about 160 models, four times the number available in 2020.

The lower running costs are coming as more Europeans switch to electric vehicles. BEVs accounted for 22% of new passenger car registrations in the EU during the first half of 2026. However, adoption varies widely between countries. Denmark recorded an 80% share, while Belgium reached 36%. France and Germany recorded 28% and 26%, respectively.

Electric trucks are also getting more competitive. The ICCT says BEV and diesel-powered trucks may reach similar total ownership costs in the freight market by 2030. Germany has reached this point in long-distance and regional trucking, helped partly by policies such as exemption from road tolls for heavy trucks with no tailpipe emissions.

Charging infrastructure is expanding alongside the market. The EU had about 1.16 million public chargers by June 2026, nearly eight times the number available in 2020. However, charging costs still depend heavily on where drivers charge their vehicles. Public charging can cost around twice as much as charging at home.

The shift towards electric vehicles could also reduce Europe’s dependence on imported fossil fuels. The ICCT estimates that EVs already help save around €4.5 billion ($5.2bn) each year in fossil fuel imports.

Overall, the numbers suggest that Europe’s move towards electric transport is increasingly being driven by economics. As batteries become cheaper, fuel remains expensive and more charging points become available, EVs are becoming a more affordable choice for many European drivers.

These favorable cost savings open the door for brands like Lucid Motors (NASDAQ: LCID) to appeal to even more motorists who remain skeptical about the economics of owning an EV.
