America Bets $2B in Race to Dominate Quantum Computing

The United States is making a major push to take the lead in quantum computing with a $2 billion investment aimed at speeding up research and development in the field. The move comes as the U.S. faces growing competition from China and sees quantum technology as an important part of its future economic and national security strategy.

At the heart of the effort is the Quantum Genesis Initiative, which aims to develop the world’s first fault-tolerant quantum computer by 2028. Such a machine could perform certain complex calculations that are far beyond the practical capabilities of today’s traditional computers.

Quantum computers work differently from ordinary computers. Instead of using only bits that represent either zero or one, they use quantum bits, or qubits, which can process information in ways that could make them extremely powerful for specific tasks. Potential uses include studying molecules for new medicines, improving large-scale logistics, supporting financial modeling and solving complex scientific problems.

However, building a reliable quantum computer remains a major challenge. Qubits are extremely sensitive to disturbances from their surroundings, which can cause errors during calculations. For quantum computers to become useful on a large scale, researchers must find better ways to control these errors and keep quantum systems stable.

The U.S. plans to use part of its investment to support quantum computing companies through grants. The government also intends to take ownership stakes in some important ventures. This would allow Washington to support the growth of the industry while keeping key quantum technologies under domestic influence.

Cybersecurity is another major reason for the push. While quantum computers could help strengthen national security in some areas, powerful machines could eventually threaten existing encryption systems. Some of the encryption used today could become vulnerable to quantum attacks if sufficiently advanced quantum computers are developed.

To prepare for this risk, the U.S. is also planning a move toward post-quantum cryptography. Federal agencies are expected to transition to stronger, quantum-resistant security standards between 2030 and 2031. The aim is to protect government systems, sensitive information and critical infrastructure before quantum computers become capable of breaking current protections.

The race is also closely linked to competition with China. Both countries are investing heavily in quantum research, and gaining an advantage could have consequences far beyond the technology industry. Leadership in quantum computing could influence artificial intelligence, defense, cybersecurity, healthcare and the wider economy.

The $2 billion investment has already boosted interest in quantum computing companies, with related stocks seeing gains. Still, the road ahead is uncertain. Meeting the 2028 target will require major progress in hardware, software, error correction and qubit stability.

For America, the quantum race is therefore about more than building a powerful computer. It is a strategic bet on technology that could shape economic and geopolitical power for decades to come.

The money earmarked to accelerate quantum computing R&D in the U.S. could trigger heightened investor interest in companies like D-Wave Quantum Inc. (NYSE: QBTS) that have hit several milestones in their efforts to advance quantum computing in the country since these firms are strategically positioned to attract federal government support.
