Hyundai is preparing to accelerate its electric vehicle (EV) expansion by relying on new battery technology that promises higher output, faster charging and lower costs. The South Korean automaker wants electrified vehicles to account for 60% of its global sales by 2030, a major increase from the 23% recorded last year.
The company outlined its plans during its 2026 CEO Investor Day, where it also announced plans to launch or update more than 100 vehicle models by 2030. Hyundai is targeting an operating margin of more than 9% as it expands its electrified vehicle business.
At the center of the strategy is Hyundai’s new battery technology. The company says it has independently developed battery cells that can deliver more than twice the output of the high-nickel cells used in its earlier battery packs. The new technology is also expected to cut charging times by about 40%, making Hyundai’s future EVs more convenient for drivers.
Hyundai is also looking for ways to make electric vehicles more affordable. EV models scheduled to launch next year will use mid-nickel NCM battery cells, which the company expects to reduce battery costs by around 30%. Since batteries are among the most expensive parts of an electric vehicle, lowering their cost could help Hyundai improve the price and competitiveness of its EVs.
The automaker is also working on an improved cloud-based battery management system. Hyundai expects the technology to increase average battery life by about 20% by 2028. This could give customers greater confidence in the long-term performance of their electric vehicles.
Hyundai’s battery plans will also support its upcoming extended-range electric vehicles. The first models are expected to arrive in the first half of 2027. A Santa Fe EREV will target more than 600 miles, or about 965 km, of total range. Hyundai says the vehicle can achieve this while using less than half the battery capacity of a comparable fully electric vehicle.
The company is also paying greater attention to battery safety. Thermal Runaway Protection will debut on the Genesis GV90 and is designed to prevent heat from spreading between battery cells during a battery fire. Hyundai says the technology has undergone more than 200 tests.
Beyond batteries, Hyundai is expanding its wider EV and technology plans. It expects European EV sales to rise from 116,000 last year to more than 420,000 by 2030. The company is also developing robotaxis and advanced autonomous driving systems.
With stronger batteries, lower costs and longer driving ranges, Hyundai is positioning itself for faster EV growth. Its battery investment could play a key role in helping the company increase production and compete more strongly in the rapidly changing global electric vehicle market.
For firms like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) that specialize in making batteries, the success that Hyundai hopes to attain when it transitions to new in-house-built batteries highlights how much more room there is to improve battery technology in order to address different market needs.
