Analyst Says Crypto Volatility Could Reduce as Younger Investors Enter Market

Bitcoin’s future in the investment world could be shaped by younger investors, according to Eric Balchunas, an analyst at Bloomberg ETF. He believes Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) could eventually grow to thrice the size of ETFs focused on gold as younger generations accumulate wealth and become more familiar with cryptocurrency.

Balchunas’ view is based on the possibility that Bitcoin will become more accepted as a store of value. While gold has held this role for generations, Bitcoin is still a relatively young asset with a history of significant price movements. The analyst believes this difference could change as the cryptocurrency market develops.

One of the biggest challenges facing Bitcoin is its volatility. Bitcoin prices can rise or fall sharply within short periods, making some investors hesitant to hold it for the long term. Gold, in contrast, has generally experienced lower volatility and has a longer history as an investment asset.

According to Balchunas, a reduction in Bitcoin’s volatility could encourage more institutions to consider it as a store of value, a safe-haven asset, or an alternative investment. If Bitcoin’s price movements and relationship with other financial assets become more similar to gold, institutional investors may become more comfortable including it in their portfolios.

Younger investors could play an important role in this transition. Many people entering the investment market today are already familiar with digital assets as well as cryptocurrency technology. As they grow older, earn more money, and build their investments, they could contribute to greater demand for Bitcoin ETFs.

The analyst also points to the stronger sales activities surrounding Bitcoin ETFs. He says cryptocurrency wholesalers are proactively educating clients, including older investors, about these products. This distribution effort could help Bitcoin ETFs reach more investors and increase their adoption.

However, Bitcoin’s current market performance shows that challenges remain. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs experienced significant outflows during September despite recording fresh inflows on September 17. For the week through that date, the funds recorded combined net outflows amounting to $426.81 million. These figures highlight how investor interest can change quickly depending on market conditions.

Balchunas has also made it clear that Bitcoin’s potential growth does not mean gold will disappear. Gold remains an established investment asset with a long history, while Bitcoin continues to develop its position in financial markets.

As younger investors become more active in investing, their preferences could influence how digital assets are viewed in the future. Whether Bitcoin ETFs eventually surpass gold ETFs will depend on factors such as volatility, institutional adoption, investor demand, and market development. For now, the analyst’s prediction reflects a possible long-term shift rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Major players like Riot Blockchain Inc. (NASDAQ: RIOT) in the crypto industry may study demographic trends to see how the uptake of cryptos among younger investors grows over the coming years.
