Big news for Spok Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SPOK); last week investment firm B. Riley Financial Inc. (NASDAQ: RILY) initiated coverage of the healthcare IT company, giving it a Neutral rating and a price target of $15. So, what does Spok do, and why does it matter?
Spok Holdings is a major player in healthcare communication solutions. It helps hospitals across the United States stay connected and coordinated. The company has the largest installed base of pagers, around 750,000, and the business is not just about paging. It exclusive Spok Care Connect software helps hospitals manage directories, on-call scheduling and message routing to keep things on track. In short, the company plays a key role in the healthcare industry.
Furthermore, the company has big names and longevity. It serves 7 of the top 10 children’s hospitals and 18 of the top 20 adult hospitals in the country. And these hospitals aren’t just fleeting customers; on average, they’ve stuck with Spok for a whopping 24 years.
In early 2022, Spok’s management team made a big move; it shifted focus toward optimizing cash flow and giving back to shareholders. And the results are in: the company returned $25 million in 2022 and another $26 million in 2023 through dividends. Looking ahead, they’re aiming for more than $25 million in 2024. For shareholders, that’s some serious dedication.
While Spok’s business (a mix of wireless services and software sales) saw a minor 1% decline in the first half of 2024, they’re not sitting still. The team is laser-focused on reducing losses in wireless subscribers and boosting average revenue per unit (ARPU) with their next-gen GenA pager. They’re also expanding their software offerings to more hospitals, both new and existing. Its goal is to ensure that things keep growing.
- Riley is cautiously optimistic. Firm analysts believe Spok’s free cash flow will continue supporting dividend payouts, which is great for investors. However, they are holding off on upgrading their rating until they see some solid margin expansion. If Spok can achieve a 3% growth in adjusted EBITDA in 2024 — through reducing pager losses, increasing software sales or expanding internationally — the analysts might reconsider their Neutral stance.
Spok had a strong second quarter in 2024, reporting a GAAP net income of $3.4 million and $34 million in total revenue. The company also signed 18 six-figure contracts and 1 seven-figure contract, further cementing its market dominance.
So, what should we conclude from this? Spok is a stable, shareholder-focused company with more room for growth. And while B. Riley is playing it safe for now, the future looks quite promising.
