Chicago Prepares to Introduce Battery-Powered Commuter Trains

Chicago is preparing to make its commuter rail services cleaner with the introduction of battery-electric trains. Metra, the regional railroad serving the city and surrounding areas, has ordered eight new trainsets from Swiss manufacturer Stadler. The first trains are expected to begin carrying passengers by 2028.

Unlike traditional diesel trains, the new trains will run on electricity stored in onboard lithium-ion batteries. This will allow Metra to operate passenger services without installing overhead electric wires along the railway line. The approach could help the agency reduce pollution while avoiding the high cost of upgrading existing railway infrastructure.

The trains will initially serve a 16.4-mile section of the Rock Island Line known as the Beverly Branch. The route connects LaSalle Street Station in downtown Chicago with Blue Island Station. Its relatively short distance and frequent stops make it suitable for testing battery-powered rail technology in regular passenger service.

Each trainset is expected to accommodate about 208 seated passengers. Passengers will benefit from features designed to make journeys more comfortable and accessible. These include accessible boarding, restrooms, bicycle and luggage storage, USB charging ports, and open connections between carriages.

Battery performance will be an important part of the project. The trains are expected to cover around 50 miles on a full charge, providing enough energy for approximately three round trips along the planned route. They will recharge at railway terminals and yards using suitable electrical connections and charging equipment. The trains can also recover some energy when braking and return it to their batteries.

Although the new trains are capable of reaching speeds of 90 miles per hour, Metra plans to operate them at a maximum of 79 miles per hour. This matches the speed limit used by the agency’s existing diesel trains.

The move could bring several benefits to communities along the railway. Since the trains will not burn diesel while running, they will produce no direct exhaust emissions along the route. They are also expected to reduce noise and vibration, making railway operations less disruptive to nearby residents.

Chicago’s project comes as transport agencies across the United States explore cleaner alternatives to diesel-powered rail services. Other operators, including Caltrain in California, are also examining ways to expand electric rail operations.

If the new trains perform as expected, Metra could use the experience to improve future services and explore additional routes for battery-electric trains. The technology may also offer other cities a more affordable way to modernize commuter rail without electrifying entire railway networks.

The project represents an important step towards cleaner public transport, combining existing railway infrastructure with new technology to make regional travel more sustainable. As more train services go electric, battery makers like QuantumScape Corp. (NYSE: QS) could have a much bigger market to serve than they had initially projected.
