Large Asset Owners Cautiously Embrace Crypto, Survey Finds

Large asset owners around the world are slowly warming up to cryptocurrency, but they are doing so with caution. A recent global survey by Northern Trust shows that digital assets are no longer being ignored by major investors such as pension funds and institutional asset managers.

According to the findings, about 46 percent of asset owners now hold cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. In addition, 44 percent are investing in exchange-traded funds that focus on digital assets. This shows a clear shift in attitude as more institutions begin to see crypto as part of a modern investment portfolio. Just a few years ago, many of these investors were hesitant or completely uninterested in the space.

Even with this growing interest, the approach remains careful and measured. Many asset owners are not rushing in blindly. Instead, they are taking time to understand how digital assets work and how they fit into long-term investment strategies. This cautious approach reflects the uncertainties that still surround the crypto market.

One of the main concerns is risk. Cryptocurrencies are known for their price volatility, and this makes large investors uneasy. For example, the price of Bitcoin dropped significantly over a 12-month period, highlighting how quickly values can change. While there are opportunities for high returns, there is also a real chance of losses. This balance between reward and risk is a key reason why some institutions are still holding back.

Regulation is another major issue. Many organizations are waiting for clearer rules from governments before increasing their exposure to crypto. Without proper regulation, investors face uncertainty about how digital assets will be treated legally and financially. Alongside this, there is also a lack of in-house expertise. Some institutions simply do not yet have the knowledge or skills needed to confidently manage crypto investments.

Despite these challenges, digital assets are attracting attention for more than just their investment potential. Technologies like blockchain and tokenization are being explored for their ability to improve how financial systems operate. These innovations can help increase efficiency, improve data accuracy, and make transactions smoother, especially in private markets.

Looking ahead, the adoption of cryptocurrency among large asset owners is likely to grow, but at a steady pace. As regulations become clearer and infrastructure improves, more institutions may feel confident entering the market. Rather than completely changing their investment models, most asset owners are focused on using digital assets in practical ways that solve existing problems.

As more institutional players enter the crypto market, it would be interesting to watch how trading volumes shift on exchanges like Coinbase Global Inc. (NASDAQ: COIN) given that these large asset owners tend to hold their assets for the long term rather than actively trading them.
