Rivian Automotive Inc. (NASDAQ: RIVN), an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is taking a fresh approach to car controls. Instead of the boring and plain designs many cars use, Rivian has created something fun, colorful, and inspired by anime and optimism. This new design makes interacting with the car more enjoyable and reflects Rivian’s vision for a better, more sustainable future.
Jeff Hammoud, Rivian’s Chief Design Officer, explains that the goal behind the redesign was to bring “optimism” into the driving experience. Unlike the aggressive and harsh designs often seen in trucks, Rivian wanted their vehicles to feel welcoming and friendly. Hammoud says their vehicles and software reflect a belief in protecting the planet for future generations.
The new software design matches Rivian’s brand, which focuses on positivity and hope. The cheerful look of the car’s interface is meant to make drivers feel good every time they use it.
The updated software from Rivian makes use of graphics inspired by Japanese anime and Studio Ghibli films. These animations are colorful, dynamic, and playful so that when you change a driving mode, the screen doesn’t just show a boring menu—it transforms.
For example, switching to “Snow Mode” displays a beautiful snowy landscape, while “Sport Mode” creates a racing scene with glowing lights and speed lines. This makes adjusting the car’s settings not only functional but also entertaining. Rivian has even added “costumes” to the software, inspired by classic movies and TV shows like Back to the Future and Knight Rider.
Rivian used Unreal Engine, a powerful 3D graphics tool popular in video games, to create these visuals. This technology makes it easy to customize the graphics for each vehicle. For instance, the screen will show your car’s exact color and wheel type, creating a more personal experience.
Hammoud explained that this technology saves time and effort. Instead of drawing thousands of images for different car options, the software generates them instantly.
While these animated graphics may not be necessary for driving, they add a unique personality to Rivian’s vehicles. The design makes using the car’s controls something drivers can look forward to, rather than just a task.
The interface also represents a step forward in how we interact with modern vehicles. Rivian’s software shows how EV makers can combine technology and art to create a better driving experience.
As Rivian continues to update its cars, the company plans to keep improving its software and adding new features. With this mix of optimism, anime inspiration and innovation, Rivian is setting a new standard for EV design.
