South Korea has announced one of its biggest technology investment plans ever. The country plans to spend more than $1 trillion over the coming years to strengthen its leadership in semiconductor chips and artificial intelligence (AI). The government believes this investment is necessary to stay ahead in the fast-growing global technology industry.
President Lee Jae Myung introduced the plan as a major step toward securing South Korea’s future. He said the country must move faster than other nations in developing the key technologies that will shape the world. The strategy focuses on three main areas: semiconductor chips, physical AI, and AI data centers.
The country’s two leading memory chip manufacturers, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, will play an important role in the project. Together with their suppliers, the companies plan to invest about $518 billion to build two new semiconductor manufacturing plants each in the southwestern part of South Korea. These new facilities are expected to increase chip production and support future technological growth.
Regional governments are also joining the effort. Gwangju City and South Jeolla Province will invest billions of dollars to support the new semiconductor projects. In addition, another major investment will be made to create a chip packaging cluster in the Chungcheong region near Seoul. This facility will help complete the manufacturing process and improve the country’s semiconductor supply chain.
Artificial intelligence is another key part of the plan. South Korea intends to build large AI data centers with support from major companies, including SK Group, GS Group, and Naver. By 2035, the country aims to develop a massive AI data center network that will provide the computing power needed for advanced AI services and future technologies.
The government also hopes this investment will bring economic growth to regions outside the capital area. Many of the new projects will be located in southwestern South Korea, where there are strong energy resources that can support large manufacturing facilities and data centers. Officials believe this will create jobs, attract new businesses, and reduce the economic gap between Seoul and other parts of the country.
However, the plan has not escaped criticism. Opposition leaders argue that placing major semiconductor projects in the Honam region may be influenced by politics because it is one of President Lee’s strongest areas of support. They believe companies should choose investment locations based only on business reasons.
President Lee has rejected those claims. He says the decision was made because the southwest has suitable power resources and strong potential for industrial development. He believes the investment will strengthen South Korea’s economy, improve regional development, and help the country remain one of the world’s leading technology and semiconductor producers for many years to come.
For Asian firms like Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE: BABA) that are leading players in the continent’s tech sector, the ambitions of South Korea to supercharge its AI ecosystem will present considerable competition if the plans materialize as envisaged.
